Advent of Change

Farm Africa is delighted to be part of the unique Advent of Change calendar for Christmas 2019, which is available in 300 Waitrose & Partners stores across the country. Last year Advent of Change launched the first-of-its-kind charity advent calendar. By the end of 2018 the movement had raised £100,000 for its 24 chosen charities, and even received an award from the Prime Minister in recognition of outstanding contribution to charitable causes.

Each day of this alternative advent calendar represents a 50p donation to a different charity and describes how that gift could be used, giving the recipient a ‘feel-good feeling’ when seeing exactly how they’ve helped. The calendars featuring a donation to Farm Africa are available to buy here.

The Waitrose & Partners Foundation and Farm Africa have been working together since 2017. Farm Africa manages the Foundation’s programme of activities in Kenya with the aim of improving the livelihoods of employees and their families in the Waitrose & Partners supply chain.

Every time customers buy a product with a Waitrose & Partners Foundation logo, their purchase includes a contribution to the Foundation, which helps invest back into farmer and worker communities, increasing income opportunities and improving access to education and healthcare.

Farm Africa conducted detailed assessments with farm workers across seven supplier farms. Based on our findings, we collaborated with farm workers to develop a programme of projects around five thematic areas: Access to Education, Access to Finance, Health & Wellbeing, Water & Sanitation, and Environment & Green Energy.

Worker-focused projects will be implemented from autumn 2019, including water purification, affordable housing schemes and the setting up of micro-lending schemes through mobile technology.
