        On January 17, 2012, the project named new technology of strengthening rotating packed bed reactor accomplished through the cooperation between Yantai Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd. (predecessor of Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd.) and Beijing University of Chemical Technology won the 2nd Prize of National Technological Invention Award of 2012. This project invents a series of rotating packed bed reactors or separators with novel structure that can be applied in the separation of substances in different reaction systems and in low-density and high-viscosity systems, proposes a new method of strengthening and adjusting rotating packed bed reactor during the rapid liquid phase reaction process restricted by micro mixing and transferring, the new technology of strengthening and condensation of rotating packed bed is original in the world and successfully applied in multiple sets of MDI equipment of Wanhua with remarkable energy-saving and consumption-reducing as well as capacity-expanding and yield-increasing effect. This reward is the fifth national scientific and technological award won by Yantai Wanhua after winning the 1st Prize of National Progress Awards in Scientific & Technological and the 2nd Prize of Progress Awards in National Scientific & Technological. Winning a series of national awards fully demonstrates the technological R&D capacity and scientific and technological innovation capacity of Yantai Wanhua, meanwhile, it shows the comprehensive competitive strength and industry leader position of Wanhua in the MDI manufacturing field.

        In 2012,  the TOP 100 Innovative Enterprises is published in Report on Development of Chinese Innovative Enterprises 2011, as it is reported that , ZTE, Huawei and Yantai Wanhua ranked top 3. The report is officially issued with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology and other departments .
        This ranking is measured and calculated based on the Tech-Innovation Dependence Index. The index system includes four quantitative indexes, R&D funding intensity, quantity of patents for invention held by one thousand R&D personnel, proportion of sales revenue of new products (processes, services) in prime operating revenue, overall labor productivity, and one qualitative index, innovation organization and management.

        On January 8, 2008, the project of 200,000 tons/year large-scale MDI production technology development and industrialization of Yantai Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd. (predecessor of Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd.) won the 1st Prize of the National Progress Awards in Scientific & Technologyof 2007. Before that, the 1st Prize of the National Scientific & Technological Progress Prize in chemical industry had not been awarded for five years. This project successfully developed a series of advanced processes and technologies, such as, a multistage continuous condensation reaction technology development, receiving almost 20 invention patent licenses and realized large-scale industrialization in the Wanhua Ningbo industrial park, in which the newly-built equipment is successful for the first commissioning and operated stably. Compared with equipment of similar technologies, MDI equipment built with the technologies from this project requires low investment, low consumption and yields high quality, thus obtaining strong competitiveness, which indicates that MDI (the most important raw material in China's polyurethane industry) production technology has reached international top-ranking level.

      Isophorone diamine (IPDA) is a kind of aliphatic diamine with excellent performance, whose widest application is to produce isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) through a reaction with phosgene.

      In addition, it can also be used as the raw material in the synthesis of polyamide and as an epoxy curing agent with excellent performance. Research on technologies in the whole industry chain of isophorone mainly include the research and development of three key technologies: isophorone (IP), isophorone nitrile (IPN) and isophorone diamine (IPDA).Development of each technology is a global challenge. In 2007, Wanhua officially launched research on technologies in the whole industry chain of isophorone. After seven years of technical study, three sets of pilot-plant technological process (IP, IPN, IPDA) designed and developed by our researchers were completed at the end of 2013 and produced qualified IP, IPN, IPDA products, which marked that Wanhua had fully mastered the core technologies in the whole industry chain of isophorone.

      MDI manufacturing mainly includes three parts: polyamine manufacturing, phosgenation, separation and purification, in which phosgenation reaction is the most critical link.The energy consumption in traditional phosgenation technological processes accounts for over 60% of the total consumption of MDI manufacturing. Because the phosgenation reaction has rapid reaction speed and a complicated gas-liquid-solid three-phase reaction system, the technological development is recognized as the most complicated link in MDI manufacturing. The researchers at Wanhua focused on the development of the reactor and finally successfully developed new fifth-generation technology for phosgenation reactions with the new reactor as the core after five years of numerous pilot plant tests and industrial tests. The application of this technology increases the capacity of the single set of MDI equipment phosgenation reaction system of Wanhua from 200,000 tons/year to over 400,000 tons/year, sharply reduces the solvent dosage and reaches over 40% comprehensive energy saving, thereby establishing the leading position of Wanhua in worldwide MDI manufacturing field and enhancing the competitiveness and influence of Wanhua in international polyurethane industry.

      ADI is a general term of aliphatic isocyanates, with representative varieties like dicyclohexyl methane-4,4’-diisocyanate (H12MDI), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), etc. ADI has a complex process and is difficult to be technologically developed, so that only a few enterprises in the world have been able to produce it in the past 60 years. The project named “research and development of ADI-series products of Wanhua” lasted ten years from project approval to a significant technological breakthrough with arduous research and development. In 2009, a kiloton ADI pilot-plant designed and developed by the researchers at Wanhua was completed and successfully implemented in the first commissioning, and produced qualified H12MDI, HDI and IPDI products successively. Since then, Wanhua has successfully opened the door to ADI-series products manufacturing.
